The Hotel is thematic – its theme is Port Wine.
To start with, you are in the heart of the demarcated region, reputedly the oldest in the world. It is easy to cover this region from you base at the Vintage House. You can choose various ways of seeing the region.

First the Port Wine Route – this can provide you with a visit to some of the estates where you can taste and buy Port Wines.

Pinhão station is just behind the Hotel and from this you can branch out along the middle of the region, east or west. You also have very beautiful trips on the small gauge lines, up the Corgo and Tua valleys.

Between April and October there are cruises from Oporto to Pinhão as well as shorter trips by local ‘Rabelo’ boats. In many cases it is necessary to make previous reservations for which our reception will be happy to help. You can also participate in organised trips by Jeep, with a guide and driver into less accessible parts of the region.

One thing we feel you should try to see if you can, are the Palaeolithic relief drawings near the mouth of the river Côa near to the Spanish border. These are unique in the world.

The Hotel is ideally situated in the very heart of the demarcated wine region and indeed is surrounded by famous Port vineyards. This is just the place to get to know more about its famous product.

We are able to provide you with the opportunity of getting to know the main styles of Port and wine from grape to the glass.

We have renowned winemakers from the region who can highlight the various aspects that make this wine so unique.

The river Douro and its tributaries are ideal for fishing and water sports. It is also the centre of a region, rich in natural and architectural beauty and history.

The wine estates surrounded by their terraces rise up from the river in a majestic landscape of great beauty.

During a visit to the region you will have an opportunity to enjoy the local craftmanship, such as traditional baskets, tapestry, black ceramic bowls, and local cooking.

Like many other wine areas the Douro Region has its own ‘Port Wine Route’ which is well signed along the roads. The region is divided into three subregions, each with its own microclimate. Throughout the region there is always a huge climatic difference between the hot dry summers and the cold wet winters. The Douro wine region has a total area of roughly 250.000ha, between the west and eastern boundaries with 40.000ha under vine.

This region is almost certainly the oldest officially demarcated region for wines in the world. It is easy to appreciate in this unforgettable landscape of vineyards and estates, man’s influence over nature through the centuries.
