On this half day excursion from Madrid you will visit San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a living monument and a tremendously important tourist attraction. The city is universally renowned and was declared a Historical and Artistic Monument in 1971. Thirteen years later in 1984, UNESCO recognized it as a Monument of World Interest. As Unamuno stated after his first visit to the monastery, "It is a place that all Spaniards, who have a historical conscience of what it means to be Spanish, should visit at some time during their lifetime, as the devout Moslems visit the Mecca". We will also visit the imposing monument built as a memorial for those who died during the during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It is located on the Guadarrama Mountains in the province of Madrid, on Cuelgamuros Valley at a height of 1,300 meters. The Monastery with a bold basilica dug out of the granite mountain and a dramatic stone cross 150 meters high.
