DAY 1:
São Jorge Island
- Departure from the Hotel at 09:30 AM or 02:30 PM towards Ponta dos Rosais,
on the most western tip of the Island, with a magnificent view over Faial and
Pico Islands.
- Returning from Ponta dos Rosais by the same road, the next stop is in a cheese
factory to see how the famous St. Jorge cheese is made.
- The tour continues to the north side of the Island. Through the northern road
of the Island, passing by Beira, Toledo and Sto. António villages, we reached
Norte Grande with view over Fajã do Ouvidor, low-lying area leading to the sea
so characteristic on the Island.
- The tour continues to Norte Pequeno and Fajã dos Cubres, with magnificent view
over the north side of the Island and its typical coast. Next stop is in the
picturesque village Manadas to visit Sta. Bárbara Church, one of the most
magnificent churches on the Island.
- The tour continues on to the Urzelina, where the church tower is all that
remains of an ancient church which was buried by the eruption of Pico da
Esperança in 1808.
- Return to Velas and arrival at the Hotel around 12:30 PM or 05:30 PM.

São Jorge, an elongated island with a length of 56 km and a maximum width of only 8 km, São Jorge has an area of 246.25 km2. Created by successive volcanic eruptions in a straight line, of which craters remain, its central platform has an average altitude of 700 metres. The coast is steep, almost vertical, particularly in the north, although the cliffs are interrupted by small coastal flat areas: the fajãs.
