Introduction:

The settlement of Pico started in the year 1460 at Lajes, a small place located on the island´s south coast.

Besides several impressive 17th and 18th century buildings, the town is best known for its large whale processing factory which closed down in 1981.

Dominating the scenery, Pico´s 2,319-metre-high mountain is in fact the top of the world´s biggest mountain range known as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, measuring 16,100 km long and 805 km wide.

Day by Day Itinerary:


		1 Day (Duration: 08h00 approx.) DAY 1: pico island - Pick up from your hotel in Faial Island - Departure from Horta Harbour 07:45 AM by boat to Pico Island. (NOTE: If staying on Pico Island you will be picked up from your hotel) - Arrival at Madalena half an hour later and beginning of the tour. - Departure to Arcos do Cachorro, magnify geological formations. - Through the area of Mistérios, extensive fields of lava, we reach S. Roque. - Stop and visit the old Whales Factory. - Continuing through an inner road we cross the Island to Lagoa do Capitão and then to Lajes. - Stop for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, a visit to the village of old Whalers Men. - Optional visit to Whalers Museum. - Return to Madalena by the coastal road, visiting the Church of S. Mateus, a handicraft exhibition and a cheese factory. - Return to hotel around 5:30 PM. if you are staying on Pico or 16:45 PM the boat will take us back to Horta on Faial Island. Arrival at 17:15 PM L
