Join us on our olive farm tour to Aubocassa (Albocasser) farm.
The Aubocassa ( Albocasser ) farm is in Mallorca in the area of Manacor,
in the east of the island, one of the few places where the flavour of rural
Mallorca has managed to survive.
The farm is an ancient property, referred to in 12th century documents and on
which history has left traces of the different crops that have shaped the
Majorcan countryside. The ullastres are an unequivocal testimony to an
oil-producing past; the celler talks about its vine-growing splendor; the
farmyards and the luxuriant pleta recall past livestock breeding; the old
rainwater catchments tanks show the Mediterranean philosophy of making
use of resources; and the almond, fig and carob trees are the agricultural stamp
of the 19th and 20th centuries.
  Varieties
On the Mallorca estate, only the Arbequina variety is grown. Over 21
hectares (52 acres) 7,380 olive trees are planted. The Arbequina variety is the
most common in Catalunya. It is well adapted to poor soils and is considered one
of the best for making olive oil. The tree is of medium vigour with a weeping
appearance; the fruit has a spherical shape and is small in size (1.8 g). It
produces smooth oils with enormously intense fruit flavour.
