If Spain had anything akin to the American Far West, it must have been Extremadura -the land beyond the River Duero- the area that gave birth to so many doughty Conquistadors. Cáceres (pop. 74,589), declared World Heritage City in 1985, sober, seigneurial and proud, lies in the heart of this conquistador homeland. Largely medieval, the town walls date from the time of the Almohads and even preserve some Roman sections. Twelve of the thirty towers which once protected the enclosure are still standing. MONUMENTS: Rather than any one specific sight, it is the old town as a whole, as an historic unit, that has to be walked and seen. Once inside the walls, the main points of interest are: St. Mary´s (Iglesia de Santa María). Completed in the 16th century, this elegant Gothic Church is now the city cathedral. Many an eminent citizen lies buried here.
Lower Golfines Palace (Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo). This mansion is a combination of Gothic, Mudéjar and Plateresque. Medallions and the Golfines coat of arms embellish the stone façade.
Plaza de Santa María. Flanking this somewhat elongated plaza that forms the centre of the old part are a number of impressive façades. There is the Bishop´s Palace with its medallions of the New and Old Worlds, the Plateresque Ovando Mansion and the Gothic Mayoralgo Palace.
Sun Tower (Casa del Sol). The outstanding feature of this interesting 16th-century façade is the striking crest of the Solís family over the arch.
St. Matthew´s (Iglesia de San Mateo). This erstwhile mosque, with its Plateresque portal and richly decorated tombs in an otherwise rather bare interior, stands at the highest point of the old city, St. James' (Iglesia de Santiago). Reputed to be the birthplace of the military Order of the Knights of St. James, charged with ensuring safe passage for the pilgrims bound for Santiago de Compostela. The magnificent altarpiece was carved by Alonso de Berruguete. Godoy Palace (Palacio de Godoy). Renaissance in style, with a grandiose escutcheon and beautiful patio.
